Who Can Benefit?

If you want to positively influence your lifestyle by reducing your need for restrictive and cumbersome eyeglasses or contact lenses, you may be a candidate for LASIK. After having LASIK surgery, the majority of our patients achieve 20/20 to 20/40 vision without eyeglasses. About 10% of our patients achieve even better than 20/20 vision. Most individuals can drive, play sports and participate in most activities without the aid of eyeglasses and cumbersome contact lenses after LASIK.

The Ideal Candidate for LASIK is:

  • over 18 years of age
  • has healthy corneas
  • must not have had a significant increase in their lens prescription in the last 12 months
  • people with certain medical conditions and pregnant women may not be good candidates for LASIK

Realistic Expectations

  • Only you can make such important decision to have LASIK surgery.
  • It is critical that you have realistic expectations.
  • Base your decisions on facts, not hopes or misconceptions.
  • The goal of LASIK is to reduce your dependence on corrective lenses.
  • LASIK does not always result in 20/20 vision. Even though approximately 10% of our patients actually get better than 20/20 vision, we cannot predict which ones will do so.
  • LASIK cannot correct your vision if another disease such as cataracts or macular degeneration is present.
  • LASIK cannot correct presbyopia (aging of the eye, normally occurring at age 40) and may require reading glasses.
  • With many patients in this age group, the impact of presbyopia can be lessened with a technique known as monovision.
  • We will provide you with more information about the benefits and risks when you visit our office. This will allow you to make a more informed decision.
